چکیده

This document describes two methods for reducing computational requirements during idle transmission in remote access systems incorporating digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, including asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) systems. These methods save processing power during idle transmission by generating an idle signal using lowcomplexity techniques. The generated idle signal is made spectrally compatible with xDSL systems and a nondisruptive signaling scheme is used to indicate to the farend receiver the transition between idle to active or active to idle status. A technique is presented that modulates the phase of the pilot tone to signal status transitions to the remote receiver. The computational complexity at the receiver is reduced because full demodulation and decoding is not required to determine that an idle signal is being transmitted.

Bit- and power-allocation algorithm for symmetric operation of DMT-based DSL modems

Discrete multi-tone (DMT) based digital subscriber loop (DSL) modems must allocate power and information bits to the discrete tones for quadrature amplitude modulation. The bitallocation (also referred to as bit-loading) algorithms in the literature are designed for modems that operate in the simplex mode in which the upstream and downstream signals use nonoverlapping frequency bands. However, ...

Guest editorial twisted pair transmission-ever increasing performances on ancient telephone wires

Digital subscriber line (DSL) technology for high-speed data transmission over the local-loop telephone twisted pairs was advanced in the labs of several research institutions during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Researchers began to develop and experiment with new transmission ideas and to realize high-speed modems in prototype form. As technology matured and standards evolved, these modem...

Adaptive Modulation (QPSK, QAM)

In this paper, introduced below are the concepts of digital modulation used in many communication systems today. Techniques described include quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and how these techniques can be used to increase the capacity and speed of a wireless network. These modulation techniques are the basis of communications for systems like cabl...

Crosstalk Channel Estimation via Standardized Two-Port Measurements

The emerging multiuser transmission techniques for enabling higher data rates in the copper-access network relies upon accurate knowledge of the twisted-pair cables. In particular, the square-magnitude of the crosstalk channels between the transmission lines are of interest for crosstalk-mitigation techniques. Acquiring such information normally requires dedicated apparatus since crosstalk-chan...

A New Adaptive Algorithm for Bit Allocation in DMT Modems

This paper presents a new algorithm for distributing bits to the subchannels of a DMT modem. The so-called Inverse Robin Hood algorithm converges rapidly and can effectively optimise the overall bit error rate in a non-Gaussian channel. Key-words: Discrete multi-tone modulation, adaptive bit-loading, DSL modems, non-Gaussian channels.
